£5m cost for luxury care home
The transformation of a boarded-up Wolverhampton pub into a care home for the elderly will cost around £5 million, it has been revealed.
Concern has already been voiced about the loss of yet another of the region’s pubs – but it would create up to 75 jobs.
But applicant Care Developments Ltd is pushing ahead with plans to bulldoze the landmark former Hare & Hounds in Stowheath Lane to make way for the home.
The L-shaped home would house 92 people and also include features such as a hairdressing suite, en-suite bathrooms for all bedrooms and a 27-space car park.
The scheme will be considered by Wolverhampton planning committee on Tuesday.
The real ale campaign group Camra has objected to the loss of yet another pub and claimed the home was poorly designed, positioned wrongly and too high – as part would be three storeys.
A neighbour also contacted the city council to complain.
In a report to the planning committee, case officer Richard Pitt said: “The applicant states that the scheme would provide approximately 70-75 jobs and represent an investment of circa £5 million.”
He said: “The existing public house is not considered to be of architectural merit and therefore not worthy of retention.”
